On October 22, 2018, the DC Council is holding a hearing on Bruce Monroe Park. They may vote to extend the 'disposition' of this public space under the same conditions as we have now, resulting in privatization and demolition. Plus this, see rendering below.

DC Council, I am writing to ask you to vote against PR22-0979, the extension of the Bruce Monroe Disposition agreement. There is large-scale opposition to this plan for this site. It violates the City's own zoning rules, it destroys the already-limited green space in Ward 1, and it doesn't meet the needs of Park Morton residents. It is not too late to fix this disastrous plan: The decision of the Zoning Commission is currently under appeal. The strength of the appeal, combined with opposition from the community warrants involvement from the Council. When the Bruce Monroe case comes before you again, we ask you to postpone the extension. This will provide space for the city to work with the Bruce Monroe Park neighbors and the Park Morton residents to make a better plan. The developers for this project claim they care about the community, but their continued resistance to any community input shows otherwise. We refuse to accept the developers deal offering little in family sized affordable housing (3+ bedrooms) especially to give up an already dwindling resource in the city's green space. We won't be forced to accept a development that is too big for the neighborhood. We also want to see much stronger equity in the plans for longterm existing families at Park Morton, they deserve so much more than the pittance being offered. We all know we can win more meaningful community benefits and further minimize planning impacts if the Council makes the room for a discussion with the developers. There is a plan that will make all parties happy, but the developers must come to the table with the encouragement of the Council. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this important matter. Thank you,
